Airport Transport

Part of the fun of travel is the spontaneity. Things come up and you head off in directions you hadn’t planned. One of the things I’m not a fan of though, is spontaneity at airports – trying to figure out the easiest and least expensive way to get to where I’m staying. Its very easy to get ripped off with transport at airports. In Rome a few years ago I caught a bus from the airport to the main railway station. I then needed to get a cab from there to my hotel, which I knew was only about a 5 minute drive away. I had an idea what the taxi fare should be, so when I approached a taxi driver and he quoted 25 Euros I knew that was a tourist rip off price. We ended up settling on 6 Euros, including bags (we had 5 bags between 3 of us)…

Within Australia I have standard ways I get from the airport into town – in Sydney I use the train, it avoids traffic holdups. In Melbourne I use the Skybus. Recently I discovered that if you buy a return ticket you save $6, and by prepaying you don’t have to wait in a long line for a ticket – Do some research, you’ll be glad you did!
